Who We Are

SAMPA is a Maldivian registered* not for profit, Non-Governmental Organisation that exists to promote environmental protection and sustainable development of the South Ari atoll Marine Protected Area (MPA) and the communities which border it.

Our work is targeted at two key areas;

1)      Participatory assistance to community led development projects, where outcomes benefit the community and the MPA

2)      Provide a resource for MPA decision makers and stakeholders by conducting biological, ecological and socio-economic studies

Our aim is to act as facilitators of positive change, by combining a thorough understanding of the areas in which we work with a network of resources and contacts.

1) Community Projects

The community projects with which SAMPA are involved are developed from ideas proposed by the communities themselves.  SAMPA aims to aid local communities with the resources needed to meet the following objectives:

  • Develop local level strategies for nature conservation and environmental education initiatives
  • Promote sustainable social enterprise and build capacity for ecotourism
  • Improve waste management systems
  • Improve solidarity and communications between local communities and the tourist industry
  • Promote traditional forms of sustainable resource use for future generations

2) MPA & Socioeconomic Study

Wherever possible, SAMPA will also aim to facilitate MPA and socioeconomic study to
assist national, provincial and local government agencies achieve the following government-set objectives for South Ari atoll MPA;

•   To protect and preserve important Maldivian aggregation areas for the whale shark, Rhincodon typus

•   To provide a means to promote and ensure the long term conservation and protection of the South Ari ecosystem

•   To generate income for local islands through sustainable tourism

•   To facilitate scientific research projects and foster community focused education and conservation initiative
